The Majesty of Icelandic Horses // Iceland Engagement Photographer

The springy moss expanses stretching over a moonscape of volcanic rock, the stories of faerie encampments, all fodder for my kid imagination. When Tom and I stepped off the plane we were so smitten with all things Icelandic that we almost forgot to fetch our bags. We sat with giddy smiles on our faces, eating delicious Icelandic yogurt and sipping coffee from the brilliant instant coffee machine. By the time we came to and realized what was going our bags were riding solo around the carousel.

The horses are the stuff of legend. Descended from Viking stock, these beautiful creatures have been protected since the 10th century. When we pulled our rental car over to spend some time this herd I was struck by how remarkably clearly they seemed to express themselves.

I have always lived with dogs and feel comfortable with dog language the world over but horses have always felt like they play their cards pretty close to the vest. These horses though came over to us and seemed to say “hello who are you?” clear as a bell. Then there was a bit of a tussle as it was decided who could to visit with us and who needed to steer clear.

It was an encounter I’ll not soon forget. I hope you enjoy!
